Q&A with Mfundo Phungwayo

This week we delve into yet another live of a Polokwane City striker who has been phenomenally outstanding on and off the field of play. Mfundo Phungwayo opens up about his childhood, family and love for football. 

Q: Who is Mfundo and makes you stand out?

A: Mfundo is a young, God fearing man who is humble and was raised by a single parent from Mpumalanga in Secunda. I believe that my dedication to things that my name get attached to my respect to others makes me stand out. 

Q: What sort of childhood did you have?

A: I didn't have a perfect childhood. I left home when i was 10 when i joined the academy and it was this during this time that i missed my mother. 

Q: What is that you know for sure about life?

A: I know that education plays a very important role in everyones lives but if you have a talent, which i think everyone has, you should put it to good use. 

Q: Three things people don’t know about you?

A: 1. Humble, God fearing and very queiet 

Q: What keeps you going in life?

A: My mother.

Q: What got you into football?

A: I'm from a family of 3 who all participated in different sporting codes, so they naturally had an influence in my involvement in to sports and a good friend of mine from my neighborhood inspired me to play football. 

Q: Why did you opt for a right back position? 

A: Because when i was in development i used to blay all position so when i moved into the first team i had to get a position that deals with defending and attacking. 

Q: What are some of the disadvantages of playing at the back?

A: You become a slave for other players

Q: The advantages?

A: You have a lot of space and can do both. 

Q: Which player is your worst nightmare?

A: Mahlatse Makudumela from Platnimum Stars. 

Q: Favourite player locally, dead or alive?

A: I don’t have a favourite player locally because i don’t find any of their styles interesting. 

Q: Internationally...?

A: dani alves

Q: What do you have in your training bad?

A: hahaha I don’t have a training bag, i put all my training stuff in my boot. and yes the boot is clean. 

Q: What stereotypes or misconceptions are there about footballers that you know are not true? 

A: Footballers being gay.

Q: Where will you like City to finish at the end of the season?

A: Objective is we finish top of the 4. And my wish is to win the league 

Q: What do you want to achieve come the end of the season?

A: Gain as much experience as possible and all the growth that comes with that and also do well in all my games. 

Q: How would you like people to remember you?

A: Knowing that even though i’m a soccer player i’m god fearing and very respectful 

Q: How will you be spending your Christmas break?

A: A lot of it ill be with family and i will also host a braai for my friends at my house.
