All things Polokwane City Supporters with 'Surprise'

Dec 08, 2015 @ 20:15:00

Today we talk all things, Polokwane City support base with someone who has been proclaimed by many as the ‘number one’ supporter for the Club, Xihlamariso ‘Surprise’ Ngobeni. Who would be better in unfolding this ‘support-base’ Phenomenon than the man who has seen it all happen from when the latter was only Bay United and based somewhere in the Kwazulu Natal Province. Surprise as he is affectionately known, talks about his endeavours with the club, he also echoes some of the things that supporters have been burning to say. Let’s hear it from the man whom, via the club, has been able to meet sports Personalities like Carol Tshabalala, Robert Marawa, Sports men and women and has travelled to different parts of the Motherland.

Q: Who is Surprise and how is he affiliated to Polokwane City?

A: I’m the first born in the Ngobeni household; I was born in Mahwelereng, Mokopane on the 4th of April 1983 and i finished my matric in Gojela High school. And it was during childhood where my love for football started. I used to support all local teams, including Winners Park which is now the Academy up until the chairman of the club bought Bay United to turn it into Polokwane City.

Q: You are proclaimed the number one supporter for the club; do you feel like you’re the link between supporters and the club?

A: Yes without a doubt i am, because i know all the players, from old to new and i know the management of the club and i know most of the supporters themselves. I also create and lead most of the songs that we sing at stadiums. I also liaise with supporters on my facebook page (Ngobeni Xihlamariso) with regards to our match days.

Q: Any pressure of being in that position?

A: Yes there is pressure here and there especially when there are disagreements amongst the supporters or any quarrelling that may be forthcoming and i then have to mediate and be the voice of reason as be the leader that i am.

Q: Of all the PSL clubs why Polokwane City?

A: I support it because it’s our local team and there’s no need for us to support outside teams.

Q: What does your day look like on match days?

A: I make sure that my outside is ready, I then communicate with other supporters to meet at the spot where we get our transport, in all of that, we are singing and chanting Polokwane city songs.

Q: What is your worst experience at the stadium?

A: When one of our supporters threw a loaf of bread in the stadium. (The matter was dealt with accordingly and now there’s a code of conduct that has been implemented for behavioural purposes for supporters at stadiums.)

Q: What are some of the things that supporters need to know when going to stadium?

A: They must know the fixture (What, who, when, why, how), if there will be financial contribution (if they need transport) and yes they have to be well behaved whenever they are donning the orange jersey.

Q: Which three players would you like to see City sign during the next window period?

A: Hlompho Kekana, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Itumeleng Khune.

Q: What was the most disappointing thing about the first half of the 2015/16 season?

A: The departure of Coach Kostadin Papich...we were really fond of him. But we believe in our new coach and we are hoping for the best.

Q: The most exciting?

A: How we have been able to hold our own when we played with the “Big 3” Chiefs, Pirates & Sundowns.

Q: What is it that you’re anticipating when we return from the Christmas break?

A: Just to maintain our spot in the PSL. As supporters we are not really asking for much, we want to do this for yet another year. Then we have 5 years of PSL Status in the bag and can only then start collecting cups.

Q:  What is that one thing you will like to see the club implement?

A: Membership cards. (Which is currently been processed)

Q: Any advice or motivation to anyone looking to support Polokwane City?

A: To all the people of Limpopo, we all have been waiting for a team and now we have it. Let’s support it.
