Cautious Polokwane City coach expects Sundowns to remain motivated for TKO fixture

Oct 27, 2016 @ 11:29:02

Polokwane City coach Luc Eymael expects a highly motivated Mamelodi Sundowns when the teams clash in the final Last 16 match of the Telkom Knockout at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Thursday evening.

Sundowns will have barely been back in the country for 36 hours following their African Champions League success in Egypt on Sunday‚ but Belgian Eymael says any fatigue their players are feeling will be negated by their desire to get a positive result to highlight their status as Kings of Africa.

“I have already told my players‚ don’t think these guys will give you the game or relax‚” Eymael tells Times Media Digital.

“They will want to prove they are the champions of South Africa and Africa. Their motivation will be more than their fatigue.”

But Eymael says he will lift his players for the “toughest draw we could have” as they seek progression in the Telkom Knockout.

“When I saw the draw I was already thinking we were unlucky‚ facing the team that are champions of South Africa twice in the last three years. It is the toughest draw we could have had.

“Sundowns deserve everything they have got.

"They deserved to beat Zamalek over the two games. I congratulated [Sundowns coach] Pitso [Mosimane] by SMS.

"Previously I have led three teams in the Champions League‚ so I know how difficult it is to win.

“I had spoken to Pitso about what can happen [off the pitch] before the game and around the match. They did a very good job‚ they were very well organised.”

City have shown a marked improvement under Eymael this season and have lost just one of their six games‚ an opening day defeat at Cape Town City. Since then they have gone unbeaten and proved a difficult side to break down.

They were the better side too in their last outing‚ a 1-1 home draw with Orlando Pirates‚ and Eymael says he wants to see further improvement from his players.

“Before the game I always like to think that it is 50-50. I hope we continue to improve like we have done.

“My players want to learn‚ they are very hard workers and are enjoying the training I put on for them. Tactically‚ technically‚ fitnesswise‚ their concentration levels‚ this is all improving.

“I think we have also managed to improve our style of play. My philosophy‚ wherever I have coached before‚ is that I like my teams to play good football and I think we are starting to do that.” - TMG Digital
